What would happen if two teams tied for first with the best record in the league?
What if Minnesota and Detroit had tied with the best record in the League? Both teams would make the Play-Offs, one as Division Champ and the other as the WIld-Card. Would they still make them play the one game play-off? They wouldn’t face each other in the ALDS, would they?
If both teams are in the playoffs then no playoff game is needed. The team with the better head to head record will be the Division champ and the other will get the wild card. (See 2005, New York and Boston. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL/2005.shtml )
If both teams are tied and the wild card team is already determined then there will be one game playoff to determine the division champ like they did this year.
No.

yes a playoff to decide the div. champ, head to head including the playoff would figure into home field advantage for the ALCS, since they are in the same div. they would not meet in a ALDS.

Yeah, to break the tie and determine who is division champs and who is the wild card but the division leader would play the team in either the East or West who had the least wins and the wild card team would play the other. Hope that makes sense.
