The 1998 Little League World Series took place from August 23 to August 29 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Toms River, New Jersey defeated Kashima, Ibaraki, Japan in the championship game of the 52nd Little League World Series. The 1998 Little League World Series Champions from Toms River, NJ competed in 28 games over a span of three months. The championship team consisted of twelve boys between the ages of 11 and 12, who played on the Toms River East American All Star Team.
During the Eastern Regional tournament in Bristol, CT. the boys became known as the Beasts of the East. The nickname was brought on by the team after ace pitcher Casey Gaynor won a stuffed monkey from a boardwalk stand at Lake Compounce, an amusement park in Bristol CT. Being from the east side (there are two leagues in town) of Toms River little league, and eventually the eastern region representative, the stuffed monkey became known as the Beast of the East thus landing the team with the nickname.
