It's a 4 speed transmission that doesn't need to have the clutch depressed to shift except into first. In the IndyCar Series, they use a similar system to NASCAR, except that it's a sequential shift (push stick up to shift up and vice versa) 6 speed transmission. There's speculation that in the 08 season, IndyCars will have paddle shifters mounted on the steering column. The difference is how the clutch is applied. The the IRL, F1, and Nascar guys all use the clutch pedal to engage the clutch to enter their first gear (starting gear). From there on out the clutches are set up by weight to synchronize the shift points at a set rpm, thus not requiring to engage the clutch by means of the clutch pedal. This principle is also used in drag racing in the pro mod and pro stock class. If you want to see how clutches really work, look into the Top fuel dragsters and top fuel funny cars. Right for up changes. They use an automatic double clutch, no clutch pedal.
