Football Federation Australia (FFA) a National Youth League

“Football Federation Australia (FFA) have moved to secure the future of talented young players with the introduction of a National Youth League (NYL), to run in conjunction with the 2008/09 A-League season.
“The establishment of a national youth league competition was identified as a priority in the National Football Development Plan we released last November,” FFA CEO Ben Buckley said.
“This competition is particularly important because, for the first time, talented young players will have an opportunity to play regular, quality competitive games regardless of whether they are part of the AIS program, the State sports institutes or the State football leagues.”
“There is also a clear link with the A-League, as well as the various national teams in football at Under 17, Under 20, Under 23 levels, as well as the Socceroos.”
“If you’re a young, talented male athlete, football should be your sport of choice as it offers fantastic opportunities within Australia as well as unparalleled opportunities to wear the green and gold representing Australia on the global stage,” Buckley added.
The National Youth League will comprise seven teams, with each of the current Australian A-League teams also having a youth team. This linkage is very similar to development models used throughout European and English football competitions.
“The key to improving the technical skills, proficiency and tactical maturity of players is playing games – and as many games as possible,” National Technical Director of FFA Rob Baan said.
“The new national youth league competition will provide players aged between 16-21 years of age a clear pathway from youth leagues to senior level and then on to professional level. When combined with existing State-based competitions, players in the national youth league will play between 35-40 games each year.”
“For Australia to improve its competitiveness in world football at all levels, our players must be playing competitive matches against quality opponents during this critical development period for young, elite sportsmen,” Baan said.
The integration with the AIS programs means that the best 16-17 year olds will not only be recruited to the AIS on scholarship, but also be offered contracts by Hyundai A-League youth teams. State Institute players will be used on a replacement roster when required.
Baan described the national youth league as being of “paramount importance” to the future technical development of football players in Australia.
Buckley added that the National Youth League competition will assist in the current and future development of A-League clubs with NYL matches scheduled as either curtain-raisers to A-League fixtures or the day after, depending on the preference of the club.
Sydney FC have begun their NYL preparation in earnest by appointing Steve O’Connor – who has spent the past decade as AIS head coach – as their Youth Team Coach.
A former club and national team-mate of Sydney FC head coach John Kosmina, O’Connor has also been in charge of the Young Socceroos for the past year.
In this clip it features Bolton club commentator Dave Higson commentating on Bolton’s away game at Port Vale whilst questioning the judgement and the referee.

David Baddiel and Frank Skinner then discuss how Dave was Bolton’s club commentator until they got to the Premiership, where Sky didn’t allow clubs to have their own commentary.

Dave Higson’s catch phrase was “Ding Dong Do”, years before Peter Kay and Patrick McGuiness coined “Dink dank doo” in Max and Paddy’s Road To Nowhere, so now you know.

Dave sadly passed away in March 2005, but I’m sure that his spirit will live on with classic commentary such as this and his infamous outburst of the Owen Coyle chant when said player scored at Everton (also featured on Fantasy Football League)

This film is produced by Happy Madison Productions and is distributed by Sony Pictures. It is currently under copyright to NBC Universal.

The Benchwarmers is a 2006 comedy film that was released on April 7, 2006. It stars Rob Schneider, David Spade, and Jon Heder and is directed by Dennis Dugan. It is produced by Happy Madison Productions and distributed by Sony Pictures.

Gus “Gus Bus” Matthews (Rob Schneider), Clark “Clark the Dork” Reedy (Jon Heder) and Richie “Richie Bitchie” Goodman (David Spade) are three grown men and neighborhood friends. Clark and Richie were also the unpopular kids who were constantly bullied by jocks and always benched at the little league baseball games, because of their less-than-stellar athletic abilities and Clark’s mental problems. When a nerdy boy named Nelson (Max Prado) and his friends are kicked off a nearby baseball diamond by a team of bullies, Gus and Clark chase the bullies away. When Gus and Clark return with Richie to play again and get back their feel for the game, the bullies return and demand that they leave. Gus challenges the bullies to play them for the field, and the three friends win. Later, Nelson’s father Mel (Jon Lovitz) – a billionaire nerd sympathizer tells the trio that he’s impressed with their win, and explains his plan to hold a round-robin with all the little league teams in the county, plus their team. The winners will be given access to a new multi-million dollar baseball park that he’s building. Wanting to capture the spirit and fun they never had when they were kids, the three decide to form the Benchwarmers and join the tournament. They prepare to compete with all the other teams, despite the fact that they’re three adults squaring off against nine kids per team.
Near the end of the story, Gus, the star of his team, an excellent pitcher and a huge home run hitter, is exposed for being a brutal bully as a child, not a victim of bullies. He had bullied one child so intensely that the kid, a boy named Marcus, had to be sent to an institution. At his wife’s suggestion, Gus apologizes to Marcus who becomes the Benchwarmers’ third-base coach. At the end of the story, Gus, Clark, and Richie do not play; rather, they let a team of Nelson and other nerdy kids play in the final game, to give them a chance to compete. The final game is played against a team with a heartless jock coach, Jerry (Craig Kilborn), who practically torments his players. In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Benchwarmers are losing, 42-0, when Jerry’s team throws Nelson of the Benchwarmers a “fat” pitch down the middle. When Nelson hits the ball, Jerry’s team lets him score a run while Jerry goes crazy. In the end, all of the kids, as well as Gus, Richie, Clark, Marcus, and every other adult appearing in the movie (except Jerry) have a party when they learn Gus is going to be a father.
Also appearing in the movie for a few scenes is former New York Yankees superstar Reggie Jackson who plays himself as Mel’s nerdy childhood friend, and helps the Benchwarmers train using unorthodox methods.
